Last night in the City of Harrisburg PA (about 45 minutes away from us) as funeral services were wrapping up for a Harrisburg Firefighter the alarm was sounded for a house fire in the “hill” section of the City. Units arriving found heavy fire and rescued several children from the burning home, all of which are in serious condition in the burn unit. During the fire as extra alarms were sounded, an off duty Harrisburg Lieutenant from Squad Co. 8 was responding to the Squad House to get his gear when he was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. Lieutenant Dennis DeVoe was seriously injured and earlier this evening Lt. DeVoe succumbed to his injuries.
Anyone who has ever worked a fire scene where civilian rescues occur, especially children, know that this is one of the most emotional and stressful events a firefighter will ever see. Combine those emotions with the department laying one of their own to rest literally hours ago and having a brother lose his life in the line of duty you can imagine the toll last night has taken on the Harrisburg Fire Dept. So we ask you to keep these men in your prayers and know that despite everything these men will still stand strong and protect their city just as any of us would.
