Around 6pm, East Lampeter fire units with mutual aid were sent to a building fire on Airport Dr. at the Smoketown Airport Complex. Assistant 62 (Lapp) arrived and reported a working fire in Rick Nields Auto Garage. Bird in Hand Engine 41-1 was first in and attacked the fire while being supplied by Tanker 41. Witmer Engine 62-2 dropped supply line from Old Philadelphia Pk to supply the scene. Tower 63 took the D side and the crew went to work opening up and venting the roof. Additional crews staffing Engine 63-1 and 63-2 also worked various fireground tasks. Fire Police staffing Squad 63-2 assisted with traffic control and crowd control. After working for almost 5 hours on extinguishment and extensive overhaul the fire was declared under control. Units were cleared around Midnight. For the second time in a week we owe a THANK YOU to the Lampeter Fire Co. for covering our station.
Also, as some may know, this auto repair business and garage was operated by the late Rick Nields from Bird in Hand. Rick was laid to rest on June 25th of this year and as you can imagine this is yet another blow to the Nields family. We ask you to please keep the Nields family in your thoughts and prayers!!
